How many British archeologists damaged or stole artifacts over the 19th and 20th centuries?
In the 1890’s, British invaders stole some 4,000 sculptures from the Kingdom of Benin (Nigeria).
Howard Carter destroyed the remains of Tutankhamun by pouring boiling water over the mummy and tearing him from his coffin.
William Hawley ruined the historic pattern for Stongehenge when he erected several stones using methods different from the original construction. He also dumped hundreds of bone fragments into a pit and buried it.
Why were the British such avid archeologists but so terrible at it?
