Today 160 years ago occurred the final, bloody close to the Sioux Uprising of 1862. Thirty-eight Sioux warriors were hanged in Minnesota for their part in the uprising. Initially there were 303 men sentenced to hang, but Lincoln commuted the sentences of all but those guilty of rape or participation in civilian massacres

Today marked the 158th anniversary of that famous speech by President Abraham Lincoln. The great orator of the time Edward Everett spoke for over two hours for the dedication of the National Soldiers Cemetery in Gettysburg. Lincoln followed with a short two minute speech.
