Niobe replied to the topic Hans Christian Andersen Was A Dickens Fanboy in the forum Art & Cultural History 2 years ago
Andersen was somewhat notoriously attracted to young men – so to make matters more awkward, he requested that Charles Dickens’ son shave him every morning.
Dickens was wise and instead had a barber come around every day to shave his house guest. 😬

Charles Dickens bumped into Danish writer, Hans Christian Andersen, at a party in the summer of 1847. Andersen was thrilled at meeting his hero, and Dickens’ quintessential British politeness was interpreted as mutual admiration and friendship.
Andersen would begin sending Dickens fan mail (packages of books, letters, etc) for the next nine…[Read more]

Niobe replied to the topic Was George Washington a Great Tactician? in the forum American History 2 years, 3 months ago
George Washington’s presence on the battle field was often linked to the Continental Army being very much on the loosing side. This may have been mere coincidence. Washington was most notably a uniting and inspiring leader – but perhaps he was not always the best tactician. Luckily he had a circle of trusted friends and advisors to help steer…[Read more]

The Cult of Napoleonic worship began at the Emperor’s death in 1821, reaching it’s height during the 1840’s. The reverence for Napoleon greatly impacted German literature, where pieces of writing devoted to his glory became their own genre. -

arminius started the topic Single Edged Swords More Common Than Double Edged – Why? in the forum Military History 2 years, 4 months ago
Why are there so any examples of swords that are single edged rather than double edged? If the saying is true and 2 is better than 1, why would warriors opt for single edge weapons over double edged?
I’m thinking specifically of officers’ sabres, simitars and even katanas.

I’m researching some info about the Mongolian horsemen and the spread of the empire in the 13th century and its a bit astounding to read account of how a few men on horseback, armed with bow and arrow could defeat armies that greatly outnumbered them. Definitely in the top 10.

I’ve written a couple pieces on different types of cavalry in thr last few months (Medieval heavy cavalry, the Plains Tribes of the Western U.S., etc). Who was the greatest cavalry force in all history – and why do you think they were the best (i.e. horsemanship, weaponry, tactics, etc)?
